Realizing A Dream A Life Later

January 22, 2012 |  by  |  Blog  |  Share  |

This past month, I’ve been in a very reflective place. Not really a quarter-life crisis or anything like that (that was last year) – just looking for stability in my life. Had some really good interviews last week and I’m going on a couple more this week. Already got offered one position, but I’m still holding out… Had a great interview with a great company that I think I’m going to hold out for… Really felt like a place I could grow and add value (they also seem to need a little creative spirit!).

My New Year’s Resolution is still going strong. Waking up every day and adhering to the daily schedule! Awesome. Such a hard thing to do when you work at home – but I’m making it work, finally. Just have to keep battling my fundamental darkness to keep it up.

Some of my friends from SCAD shot this amazing Original Batman TV “Homage” episode sometime in like 2005 or 2006. And like most ambitious, long student projects (I’m looking at you, I Am The Bluebird / Implanted), Barry just finished editing the thing together and man, does it look great. Watching the whole thing, I was laughing out loud and wished I still ate popcorn. Good job Barry and Josh! The whole thing is fantastic, and I recommend y’all getting over to Youtube and watching it (don’t get discouraged by the long credits sequence in the beginning!). Here’s to finally realizing your dream and having it build good fortune for years to come! (Part 2Part 3Part 4)

Looking at Barry and Josh’s dream manifest half a decade, later – I was reminded of many of my past dreams that I once thought were either unfulfilled or past dreams that I just ended up abandoning like: Star Wars Rise of the Black Sun, Arab in America, South Georgia Sports Network, the Dotfilmz Video Platform, Monster Garden’s Godaddy Spec, Follow the Film, Viceroy Village, Facebook Lifeline, the list goes on… But instead of getting all lost in my head and self-criticizing myself (like I normally do), I began to see something different… Star Wars Rise of the Black Sun did manifest itself: It got me a scholarship to the Savannah College of Art and Design – which lead to Arab in America. Sure, I was never happy with the final edit of the short nor did we get to make the feature film… – but miraculously, I found an amazing version from a long time ago that did make me proud (plus we got to go to Cannes, won awards, got a ton of press, and wrote an amazing screenplay!). And soon after I put Arab behind me: it led to another dream out of nowhere: the Comoros film (which is finally nearing completion and is turning out really great! Sorry that it’s been taking so long, guys – but I didn’t get paid for the editing/post, so I’ve been editing it together in my spare time!).

Dreams have a funny way of realizing themselves… You usually have to reach for your dreams to see that you weren’t specific enough in what your dreams actually were. Sure, your dreams might change once you hit some road blocks – but if you never tried to reach for them, you’d never know what possibilities are out there… All you have to do is put your mind to it.

Don’t get discouraged out there! Even though I didn’t get to make our feature film, reaching for that dream has been building fortune in my life ever since I extended my arm and went for it. Good causes have good effects. Sure you might not see them immediately, but they will come. Stay strong. Stay resolute. You are a powerful being capable of amazing things… Just gotta get up and do it.

A Song For My 2011… A New Determination for 2012

January 9, 2012 |  by  |  Blog, Music  |  Share  |

It’s amazing how you can listen to a song over and over again for years and years – then not hear for it a year – and then have it smack you in the face again. This happened to me yesterday after listening to Before These Crowded Streets for the 1000th time. It was amazing how all those feelings I had bottled up inside are perfectly expressed in DMB’s The Stone… Crazy.

Anyway, I know some of you don’t know this, but my 2011 was an emotional roller-coaster. I ended up making a ton of mistakes and had many realizations about myself and who I became. It wasn’t pretty, but extremely necessary. I needed a big ego burst, and 2011 seemed to be the year of reckoning. Perhaps I’ll share more with you another time.

But in the end, it brought me to where I am today. My life is completely different than it was a year ago… And I couldn’t be happier. It’s not perfect, but it will be. And that’s because I’m a determined dude, armed with a new determination for 2012: Absolute Victory.

I pray that you make good causes and new determinations for your new year, as well! Remember that you are connected to everyone and everything around you. Without them, there would be no you. So be nicer to the world and the world will be nicer to you. While I can speak from experience, don’t take my word for it! Give it a try! Happy 2012, everyone!
